CHCCS Students shine at the 14th Annual Black History Knowledge Bowl and the 4th Annual Poetry Slam, hosted by the Chapel Hill-Carrboro Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated at McDougle Middle School. The event saw enthusiastic participation from students across all four CHCCS middle schools last weekend. This enriching event aims to celebrate and deepen the understanding of African American achievements across various fields like politics, sports, and the arts. In a spirited competition, teams showcased their command of black history, with McDougle and Phillips middle schools securing first and second places, respectively.
Additionally, the Poetry Slam segment offered a platform for students to express their creativity and hone their literary skills, presenting original works that captivated the audience. Notably, Phillips Middle School students achieved first and third places, while a talented student from Smith Middle School earned second place, highlighting the impressive array of young talent within the district.
This event not only celebrated the rich legacy of African American contributions but also underscored the importance of cultural education in fostering a well-rounded and inclusive community. Congratulations to all participants for their hard work and achievements!

Jones Ferry Road in Carrboro will undergo crucial repairs from February 26 to March 1 due to slope failure caused by water erosion from University Lake. The North Carolina Department of Transportation has identified the need to address the eroding shoulder and the potential risk to the guardrail and roadway. Repairs will be carried out continuously from 9 a.m. on February 26 until 5 p.m. on March 1. While a detour route is still being finalized, Carrboro officials recommend that drivers find alternative routes and exercise caution around the work zone during this period.

As the March 5th primary election approaches, here are five critical points voters should be aware of:
Voter Registration: Ensure you're registered to vote. For those in North Carolina, you can check your registration status online. Voters must confirm their eligibility and understand the requirements for participating in the primary.
Party Affiliation Rules: North Carolina operates closed primaries, meaning Democrats can only vote in the Democratic primary, and Republicans in the Republican primary. Unaffiliated voters, however, have the flexibility to choose which primary to vote in.
Understanding the Ballot: Voters will not only select their preferred presidential nominee but also make choices in state and local contests. These elections can have significant implications, so it's vital to research candidates and issues beforehand.
Early Voting: North Carolina offers early voting options to all registered voters. This allows for greater flexibility and convenience, enabling voters to avoid potential lines on Election Day.
Vote-by-Mail: All active registered voters in certain states, including California, will receive a vote-by-mail ballot. If you're voting by mail, ensure your ballot is completed accurately and returned before the deadline.
Voting in the primary is a critical opportunity to shape the future of your community and country. Make sure you're prepared and informed when casting your ballot.
