Chapel Hill High School seniors, Sophie Lawrence and Eden Ragsdale, have achieved remarkable success in a national competition that merges innovation with the exploration of space. Under the guidance of Clare Matusevich in the CHCCS CTE Biomedical Innovations class, teams of students crafted proposals last fall for the US Department of Education’s Your Place in Space Challenge. Lawrence and Ragsdale's pioneering proposal titled "Freeze-dried Probiotics: Decreasing Gut Epithelium Leakage and Reducing Risk of Food-borne Illness in Astronauts" has been distinguished as one of only eight winning entries across the country. Their submission, rigorously evaluated by a panel of industry professionals including astronauts, stood out for its potential to safeguard the health of astronauts through innovative nutritional science. For more details about their project and to view the submission video, interested parties are encouraged to visit the official challenge website. The accomplishment of these bright students brings honor not only to themselves and their instructor but also to Chapel Hill High School, showcasing the potential of young minds when directed toward the vast expanse of space exploration.
