Deadline Extended: Chapel Hill Community Arts & Culture Call for Artists for Peace & Justice-Themed Banners

The Chapel Hill Arts Commission has announced an extension for applications to an exciting new opportunity for local artists. The call seeks a talented artist or team with a strong background in graphic design to create three vinyl banners that will be displayed at the Peace & Justice Plaza in the heart of downtown Chapel Hill. This artistic endeavor aims to explore and express themes of peace, justice, and particularly the nuances of racism, anti-racism, and the ongoing battle for racial justice.

To encourage broad participation, the commission is offering stipends of $200 for each finalist selected. In addition, the artist or team that wins the commission will receive a substantial sum of $3,000 for their work. Originally set for Monday, March 18, the deadline for applications has been graciously extended to Monday, March 25, at 5 pm. This gives interested parties additional time to submit their proposals and partake in this meaningful project.

For more details on the application process and project specifics, artists are directed to visit the Chapel Hill Arts website. This initiative not only represents a valuable opportunity for artists to showcase their work but also serves as a platform to engage with critical social issues through the medium of public art.

From Olive Oil to Green Tea: The Top Anti-Inflammatory Foods to Stock Up On

In today's health-conscious world, understanding the power of diet in managing inflammation is crucial. Chronic inflammation, a persistent immune response, can lead to several health problems, including heart disease, diabetes, and autoimmune disorders. Fortunately, incorporating certain pantry staples into your diet can offer a protective edge against inflammation. Here are a few items to keep in stock:

  • One of the most beneficial anti-inflammatory pantry items is extra-virgin olive oil, celebrated for its monounsaturated fats and antioxidants, which help regulate immune responses that cause inflammation.

  • Turmeric, with its active ingredient curcumin, stands out for its ability to reduce inflammation markers, especially when consumed with black pepper to enhance absorption.

  • Canned tuna is another essential, providing a convenient source of omega-3 fatty acids known for their anti-inflammatory properties.

  • Kidney beans add to the list with their rich dietary fiber and antioxidants, supporting a healthy gut and reducing systemic inflammation.

  • Almonds are not just a healthy snack but also contain oleic acid and antioxidants like vitamin E, which help in combating inflammation.

  • Canned tomatoes, rich in lycopene and vitamin C, offer antioxidative benefits and support the body's defense against oxidative stress.

  • Garlic, beyond its flavor-enhancing properties, contains allicin, which inhibits inflammatory enzymes.

  • Lastly, green tea, with its polyphenols and EGCG, helps in moderating inflammation-related signaling pathways.

Together, these eight pantry staples form a solid foundation for an anti-inflammatory diet, paving the way for improved health and wellness.

Empowering Engagement: Chapel Hill Wraps Up Enlightening Peoples Academy

As the curtains prepare to draw on this year’s Chapel Hill Peoples Academy, participants are wrapping up an insightful journey into the inner workings of their community. Although registration for the 2024 Academy has now closed, the enthusiasm and community spirit it has ignited promise an even more engaging experience for future participants.

The 2024 Peoples Academy offered a robust lineup of sessions, each equipped with English handouts for comprehensive understanding. Highlights included detailed explorations of town management with the Mayor and Town Manager, hands-on tours of the Fire Department and Public Works, and in-depth discussions on Planning, Economic Development, and Community Services. Thursday sessions were complemented with free childcare and dinner, while Saturdays offered breakfast, welcoming families to learn together.

The program culminated in a unique bus tour, highlighting Governance Services, Ombuds, boards, and commissions, and emphasizing the importance of community involvement. The graduation ceremony served not just as a conclusion but as a celebration of new connections formed, knowledge gained, and the collective commitment to community improvement.

As this year’s Peoples Academy concludes, the Town of Chapel Hill looks forward to opening its doors again to future community leaders and engaged citizens, ready to explore, learn, and contribute to the fabric of their community.

From Outsider to Insider: Everything You Need to Know About Us

Upon my arrival in Chapel Hill, I was an unmistakable outsider, wandering its vibrant streets with both curiosity and caution. My adventure started on Franklin Street, a lively artery where the unique charm of Chapel Hill beats strongest. This street, teeming with cafes, stores, and historical landmarks, became the gateway to understanding the traditions and transitions that define this community.

In the early days, as I explored beyond the immediate allure of Franklin Street, Chapel Hill revealed its layers to me. The charm wasn't just in its bustling downtown or the prestigious University of North Carolina campus; it was in the community's spirit. This spirit, marked by resilience and warmth, brought into sharp relief the interconnectedness of life here, especially as spring painted the town with new life, symbolizing rebirth and rejuvenation.

The pandemic brought unexpected challenges, casting a shadow over our community as some beloved businesses were forced to close. It wasn't just the loss of a place to grab a coffee or a book; it was the dimming of a piece of our community's soul. Those moments of loss ignited a determination in me. The goal became clear: to ensure that such vital community and local ecosystem not only survive but thrive, regardless of the challenges thrown its way.

My roots in North Carolina run deeper than just Chapel Hill. As a graduate of NC State, I discovered that rivalries within the ACC are spirited yet friendly competitions; it's all love at the end of the day. Rooting for Carolina Blue was a strange rite of passage, but it has been a symbol of becoming part of something bigger than myself. This journey taught me that whether it's about sports, education, or community, unity and support are our greatest strengths.

The discovery of Merritt's, with its legendary BLT sandwiches, was akin to uncovering the eighth wonder of the world – a testament to the simple yet profound pleasures found in our community. The greenways and parks, the thriving medical community, and the kitschy, cool vibe of Carrboro; each element adds a unique flavor to our collective identity.

Amid these explorations and revelations, the idea of the Chapel Hill Insider was born. This newsletter isn't just another publication aiming to fill your inbox. It's a labor of love, a bridge connecting the past, present, and future of Chapel Hill and its surrounding areas. It's about amplifying the voices of small businesses and nonprofits, sharing news and events, and above all, fostering a more connected community.

The purpose of the Chapel Hill Insider is not to step on any toes or replicate existing platforms. Instead, it's a resource for all of us to rediscover and appreciate the nuances that make this place special. This newsletter aims to align with the heartbeats of our community, remain politically neutral but informative, enhancing our journey together rather than competing against it.

For those who might view this newsletter with skepticism, let me assure you, the only agenda here is love – love for Chapel Hill, its people, and its stories. From being an outsider to becoming an insider, my journey has been filled with learning, appreciation, and a deep desire to give back to the community that I am still discovering and appreciating.

Let’s continue to explore, celebrate, and support the wonderful tapestry that is Chapel Hill, Carrboro, and the neighboring community. Together, we can ensure that the spirit of our community not only endures but flourishes, for generations to come.

With all my heart,

Your Chapel Hill Insider
