Carrboro Street Renaming Celebrates Local Civil Rights Icon Braxton Foushee; Relocated Due to Weather

In a poignant move toward honoring local heroes and rewriting history, the Town of Carrboro is set to celebrate the renaming of Carr Street to Braxton Foushee Street. This significant event will take place at the Carrboro Century Center at 9 a.m. on Wednesday, March 27, 2024, marking a departure from its original location due to weather concerns.

The ceremony will kick off with the unveiling of the new street signs, symbolizing a new era for the community. Attendees will then enjoy a program filled with speeches from local community members, poetry readings, music performances, and light refreshments. Public parking for the event is available, with details found on the town's official website.

Braxton Foushee, whose name will now adorn the street, is celebrated for his extensive contributions to civil rights in Carrboro. He notably served as the first Black member of what was then known as the Carrboro Board of Aldermen and continues to impact the community through his role on the Planning Board. The decision to rename the street was inspired by a proposal made by key figures from the Lincoln High School Alumni Association and received unanimous support from the Council last November.

The street's former namesake, Julian Carr, a figure associated with the white supremacist movements of the Jim Crow era, represents a stark contrast to the values Carrboro stands for today. A Truth Plaque at Town Hall openly acknowledges this discrepancy, emphasizing the town's current dedication to inclusivity and progress.

UNC-Chapel Hill Honors Beloved Student Wynn Burrus with Memorial Scholarship Fund

In a touching tribute to the legacy of the late Wynn Burrus, a beloved student of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, her family has initiated a scholarship fund to honor her memory and continue her impactful work. Wynn, who passed away unexpectedly in 2019, was remembered for her vibrant presence and profound influence both academically and personally among her peers and professors. Known for her extraordinary compassion and academic excellence, particularly in the Kenan-Flagler Business School, Wynn left a lasting mark on the UNC community. Professors and family members recounted her kindness, academic prowess, and the deep connections she forged, emphasizing her efforts to empower special needs students and her adventures abroad.

The Wynn Burrus Fellows scholarship aims to support Kenan-Flagler Business School students who embody Wynn’s spirit of love, learning, adventure, and community service. The fund seeks to cultivate leaders who share her commitment to making a positive impact. Despite the family's profound loss, they are determined to ensure Wynn's aspirations and values live on through this initiative. The scholarship will benefit juniors or seniors at the business school, with the Burrus family aspiring to reach a $1 million goal to endow the fund. This effort underscores a community’s endeavor to transform grief into an enduring legacy that continues to inspire and change lives in alignment with Wynn’s vision.

Quick-Thinking Officials Prevent Tragedy on Baltimore Bridge Amid Catastrophic Collapse

The Francis Scott Key Bridge wreckage sits in the water, as seen from Pasadena, Md.

Before a cargo ship crashed into a support column, causing a portion of Baltimore's Francis Scott Key Bridge to collapse, officials were able to prevent traffic from accessing the bridge, saving countless lives. Maryland Governor Wes Moore and President Joe Biden praised the quick actions of the officials involved. The disaster resulted in six presumed deaths, with a search operation paused until further notice. The incident, caused by the Singapore-flagged vessel Dali striking the bridge, is being treated as a tragic accident, not an act of terrorism.
