Avoid the Fakes: Morehead Planetarium Leads Chapel Hill in Safe Eclipse Viewing Practices

The town of Chapel Hill eagerly anticipates the total solar eclipse on April 8, with the Morehead Planetarium preparing a Solar Eclipse Party to offer a fun and safe way to have an 80% totality viewing experience. Amidst this excitement, there's a critical focus on the safe viewing of the eclipse, highlighting the risks associated with counterfeit eclipse glasses. The American Astronomical Society (AAS) stresses the importance of using certified eclipse glasses that meet the ISO 12312-2 safety standard to prevent eye damage. The Morehead Planetarium is set to be a central hub for educational activities and safe eclipse viewing, underscoring the need for genuine protective eyewear amidst concerns over fake glasses flooding the market. This event is not only a momentous occasion for Planetarium and astronomy enthusiasts but also an educational opportunity emphasizing eye safety during astronomical events. You can get more information on the Solar Party at the Planetarium and purchase the appropriate glasses to view the rare event here.

Carfax reports a significant "park outside" recall affecting over 3.7 million vehicles in the U.S., including more than 141,000 in North Carolina, due to a fire risk. The recall, predominantly involving Kia and Hyundai cars, advises owners to park their vehicles outdoors to prevent potential fires from spreading to buildings. It serves as a platform for dialogue on the consequences of state violence and the power of art as a form of protest and survival.

Mama Dip's Legacy Lives On in Orange County's Annual Community Gathering

Mildred Council aka Mama Dip, Courtesy of Mama Dip’s
Orange County is gearing up for the 23rd Annual Mildred Council Community Dinner, a celebrated occasion dedicated to fostering community bonds across diverse backgrounds. Scheduled for Sunday, April 28, 2024, at 1:00 PM, the event will take place at the McDougle Middle School Cafeteria. This annual gathering is known for its ability to bridge gaps across economic, racial, religious, and ethnic divisions through a shared experience of culturally rich food and entertainment.
The dinner, which has previously garnered recognition with a National League of Cities Award for Cultural Diversity, serves as a tribute to its founder, Mildred Council, affectionately known as "Mama Dip." Council's legacy continues to influence the event through the involvement of her family, who, in collaboration with the Carolina Inn, will oversee the preparation of the main courses. Local restaurants and churches are also contributing to the feast with a variety of side dishes and desserts, allowing attendees to enjoy a taste of the community's culinary diversity.
Contributions to the event can be made through Eventbrite or via check to the Orange County Equity & Inclusion office. Furthermore, the organizers welcome volunteers for both preparatory and day-of tasks. Those interested in volunteering or seeking more information are encouraged to contact the Office of Equity & Inclusion or visit the Community Dinner's website.
