Violent Daytime Shooting in Chapel Hill Leads to 18-Year Sentence
Ronell Canion, 29, of Durham, has been sentenced to 18 years in prison after being convicted for a shooting in Chapel Hill on April 2, 2023. Canion faced eight felony charges related to the incident, which occurred near the University of North Carolina and resulted in serious injuries to one individual and endangered many others. The conviction comes after a six-day trial, where it was revealed that Canion also attempted to influence a witness and showed no remorse for his actions. Read the full story.

Phishing Attack Compromises UNC Medical School Email Account; Prompt Response Limits Damage
The University of North Carolina School of Medicine and UNC Hospitals are notifying individuals about a security breach involving unauthorized email access, which occurred after a phishing attack on February 1, 2024. The breach was quickly contained, with no further unauthorized access reported. Impacted individuals are being contacted and offered credit monitoring services, along with advice on monitoring their healthcare billing for any irregularities. The university and hospitals are now enhancing their security measures to prevent similar incidents.

With a rich background in library services, Logan is enthusiastic about advancing community service, inclusivity, and equity. Her appointment follows a thorough nationwide search focused on finding a leader committed to diversity and community engagement. Logan replaces Meeghan Rosen, who will retire after a temporary leadership period and a long career serving the Chapel Hill community.
From Retrofit to Resiliency: Carrboro's Leap Towards Sustainable Living
The Neighborhood Energy Resiliency Project (NERP), funded by the Orange County Community Climate Action Grant Program and led by the North Carolina Sustainable Energy Association (NCSEA), aims to enhance energy efficiency and reduce greenhouse gas emissions for low-income homeowners in Carrboro, NC. The initiative includes home assessments for energy upgrades, with a focus on air sealing and insulation. It also assists homeowners in qualifying for the North Carolina Weatherization Assistance Program.
