FBI Alerts North Carolina Residents of Rising Cryptocurrency Scams

The FBI warns of a significant uptick in investment scams, especially those involving cryptocurrency, costing North Carolina residents millions. Scammers lure victims through social media, creating fake websites and apps to showcase false profits, ultimately defrauding them of substantial sums. A case in point involves Jim Wilkerson from Cary, who lost over $750,000 to a crypto investment scam. Initially convinced by the illusion of high returns and the ability to withdraw funds, Wilkerson found himself unable to access his account or communicate with the scammers after attempting to withdraw a significant portion of his purported earnings. The FBI stresses the challenges in recovering lost funds due to the unregulated cryptocurrency market and encourages prompt reporting of such crimes to assist in combating these sophisticated criminal networks.
