Trump Guilty Verdict Sparks Mixed Responses Among NC Leaders
Former President Donald Trump has been found guilty of 34 counts in a New York City criminal trial related to a 2016 hush money payment. North Carolina politicians are divided in their responses. Congressman Wiley Nickel (D) praised the verdict, while Senator Thom Tillis (R) and NCGOP Chairman Jason Simmons criticized it as politically motivated. Congressman Don Davis emphasized Trump's right to appeal, and Lt. Gov. Mark Robinson called the trial a Democratic tactic to weaken Trump before the election.

Abandoned Northgate Mall May See New Life with Proposed Redevelopment
Northgate Mall in Durham, NC, has remained vacant since its closure in 2020 due to financial difficulties from the COVID-19 pandemic. Once a bustling social and shopping hub, the mall is now an abandoned eyesore. Residents like David Sheppard and Dawn Hill-Alston recall its past significance, with Hill-Alston sharing fond memories of shopping, movies, and working there. Northwood Retail, which bought the property in 2018, plans to redevelop the 55-acre site, potentially including affordable housing and a grocery store. However, the project requires rezoning approval from the Durham City Council. The community stresses the need to retain essential resources to avoid feelings of displacement and neglect.
