💌New Series: New Eyes in Chapel Hill

Dear Insiders,

Over the break, I enjoyed a visit with my niece who helped me see this wonderful town that I have lived in over a decade with a new pair of eyes. Because of her, I received a birthday gift of experiencing Chapel Hill and Carrboro like I have not in quite a while. Over the next few days, I will share my reflections and our adventure with you. If you like it, we may keep this going. I am enjoying this journey and where it is taking me.

With warm regard,

Elana the Editor

Fresh Start Produce Sales Issues Recall for Potentially Contaminated Cucumbers

Fresh Start Produce Sales, a Florida-based company, is recalling whole cucumbers distributed to 14 states last month due to potential salmonella contamination. The cucumbers, shipped between May 17 and May 21, were sent to retail centers, wholesalers, and food service distributors in multiple states. The recall follows a positive salmonella test from a sample in Pennsylvania. The FDA is investigating whether this sample is linked to a larger salmonella africana outbreak affecting 141 people. Here is more information.

Museum of Life and Science to Launch Heat Monitoring Project with $2.3M Federal Grant

The Museum of Life and Science in Durham, NC, is set to become a major center for heat impact research, funded by a $2.3 million grant from the Biden-Harris administration. Over the next three years, ordinary citizens will collect data on heat exposure in their communities using specialized tools. This initiative aims to understand how heat affects different areas, especially low-income and urban neighborhoods, and use this data to inform decision-making and safety measures.

Franklin Street Parade Highlights Chapel Hill’s Pride and Local Support

The Chapel Hill Pride Promenade kicked off Pride Month with a colorful parade down Franklin Street, featuring local businesses and community members. The event, organized by the Town of Chapel Hill Division of Community Arts & Culture, included speeches, a street market, and performances. Local businesses like Epilogue Books Chocolate Brews played a significant role, promoting queer authors and community engagement.
