UNC-Chapel Hill Removes Fences Around Flag After Protests

UNC-Chapel Hill removed fences around the American flag at Polk Place after a month of protests over the Israel-Hamas conflict. Pro-Palestinian activists replaced the American flag with a Palestinian one, prompting Interim Chancellor Lee Roberts to restore it briefly before it was removed for safekeeping. The university canceled classes and non-essential operations, and 36 protesters were detained after refusing to disperse.

Final Phase of Estes Drive Connectivity Project Brings Significant Improvements

North Estes Drive in Chapel Hill is scheduled to fully reopen on June 12 after years of work on the Estes Drive Connectivity Project. The final step involves overnight repaving from June 4, expected to take three to four nights. The project, which began in 2022, includes road widening, a separated bike lane, expanded sidewalks, and enhanced crosswalks. Despite delays due to weather, the project is nearing completion, with a ribbon-cutting planned for the fall. These improvements aim to enhance safety and accessibility in the area.
