Chapel Hill With New Eyes: A Little Insomnia Can Be A Good Thing

It's hard to believe that after living here for nearly a decade, I hadn't stepped foot into Insomnia Cookies until Memorial Day weekend. My niece, Jewel, who is in her mid-twenties, decided to travel all the way from Ohio to treat me for my birthday. As we strolled leisurely down Franklin Street in the heat of a laid-back Sunday afternoon, she shared stories of the various cookie shops she frequented.
Like myself and other members of our family, Jewel is a bit of a snob when it comes to baked goods—a trait we inherited from my late mother, whose baking was nothing short of exquisite. Her sister, the founder and creator of Tori's Test Kitchen, a pop-up bakery shop in Columbus, Ohio, has continued my mother’s legacy and our family snobbery. Jewel has grown up to be someone I am incredibly proud of, not just for her accomplishments but for her character. I must admit there is a somewhat comforting satisfaction in watching her grow from a child to a mature adult with healthy boundaries…and strong stances on confections. Jewel’s passionate pursuit of the perfect sweet snack had led us to the doorstep of Insomnia Cookies.
As we stepped inside, the sweet aroma of freshly baked cookies enveloped us, accompanied by the pleasant chime of the door. Jewel explained the unique appeal of Insomnia Cookies: late at night when you have a sudden craving for something sweet, they’ll deliver (What?!) or will be open late. A friendly cookie concierge, I’ll call Sam, soon emerged from the back, offering us a warm welcome and engaging conversation as we deliberated over which delightful treat to choose. Honestly, I was skeptical that any cookie could be worth leaving the comfort of my Chapel Hill home in the middle of the night.
Friends, dear Insiders, my skepticism has waned and my doubt has drifted forever. I never imagined I would discover an oatmeal cookie that not only reminded me of my mother's but also made me contemplate turning on my propensity to share. The flavors were familiar yet complex, the texture—perfection, and the quality of the cookie was both abundant and astounding. My attempt to describe it falls short; "amazing" is the best I can muster, though it doesn't do it justice.
If you haven't taken a walk down Franklin Street on a Sunday afternoon lately, I highly recommend it. Take advantage of the mild summer we've been enjoying. And if you find yourself downtown, make sure to check out Insomnia Cookies. If you're watching your figure, bring a friend and split a cookie—assuming you don't mind sharing.
