Woman Surrenders to Police After Chapel Hill Hit-and-Run
Brianna Nicole Beasley turned herself in on Monday after being identified by Chapel Hill Police as the driver in a hit-and-run incident involving a bicyclist. She faces charges of felony hit-and-run and unsafe movement. The incident took place at W. Franklin Street and Kenan Street, and the bicyclist sustained non-life-threatening injuries. The vehicle, a black older-model Honda Pilot, likely has damage to the right side doors.
Chapel Hill Plans Wetland Conversion for Legion Pond by 2025
Chapel Hill plans to convert Legion Pond into a constructed wetland following a safety assessment of its dam. The new wetland will meet state safety standards and provide environmental benefits. This decision is part of a larger plan to develop the area into a park and affordable housing. The project is expected to be completed by the end of 2025. During the design phase, the town will conduct an endangered species assessment to ensure the protection of local wildlife. Additionally, staff will collaborate with the New Hope Conservation Committee of the Audubon Society to address the relocation of any affected plants and animals.
New Legislation Aims to Curb Aggressive Towing Fees and Practices
Local companies in Raleigh, Durham, Cary, Chapel Hill, Carrboro, and Wilson are under scrutiny for predatory towing practices. Accusations include violating local regulations on signage and improperly towing cars. Two proposed state bills aim to address these issues by creating a towing commission to standardize fees and regulations and empowering the attorney general to oversee towing practices. Excessive fees, particularly for credit card use, and the imposition of storage charges are common complaints. This year, the Attorney General’s Office has received numerous reports, with Barnes Towing being the most cited in central North Carolina. The proposed legislation seeks to protect consumers and ensure fair treatment in the towing industry. Read full story here.
Chapel Hill with New Eyes: YOLO at YoPo
On Saturday night of Memorial Day Weekend, my niece and I decided to take a stroll down Franklin Street and try something new. Instead of heading to my usual favorite, Ben & Jerry's, we opted for Yopo, a cozy little frozen yogurt shop just around the corner. The shop, with its few tables, chairs, and bar stools, has a charming, intimate feel.
We both chose the cookies and cream flavor. My niece kept hers plain, while I couldn't resist adding Butterfinger, chocolate chips, and sprinkles. One of the coolest things about Yopo is how they layer the toppings inside the swirl and sprinkle them all around the edges.
As we sat at the bar enjoying our treats, my niece took her first bite, and her eyes lit up with surprise and delight. "Oh wait, this is really good!" she said, and “I know, right?!” escaped my lips with a smile before I knew it. I couldn't help but agree.
We savored each bite, enjoying the flavors and the moment. It was a simple pleasure, but it reminded me of how important it is to try new things and savor the small moments in life. YOLO at Yopo was more than just a fun outing; it was a reminder that sometimes, the best experiences come from stepping out of our routines and trying something new.
