Elder Fraud on the Rise: NC Task Force Warns of Sophisticated Scams

North Carolina seniors lost nearly $7 million to scammers last year, with elder fraud complaints to the FBI rising by 14%. The state Senior Consumer Fraud Task Force highlights increasing scam sophistication, urging vigilance. The Attorney General's office recorded over 500 elder fraud cases, averaging losses of $50,000 per victim. A new helpline, 211, is available for those affected. Common scams include tech support, investment, and romance schemes. Both seniors and younger individuals are advised to be cautious and report suspicious activities.

Late-Night Accident on East Franklin Street Leaves Pedestrian in Critical Condition

A serious accident occurred on Tuesday night in Chapel Hill, leaving a pedestrian critically injured. At approximately 9:16 p.m., Chapel Hill police responded to an incident at Eastgate Crossing on East Franklin Street where a pedestrian had been struck by a vehicle. The injured individual was rushed to UNC Hospital with life-threatening injuries. Authorities reported that the driver involved in the accident remained at the scene.

Filing Period for Carrboro Town Council Seat Open Until July 5

Filing for the Carrboro Town Council’s vacant seat opened on June 10 and will close on July 5, 2024. Candidates must file in person at the Orange County Board of Elections and meet specific qualifications, including being a registered voter in the county, residing in the relevant district, and being at least 21 years old by Election Day. Filing requires a valid photo ID and a filing fee. Campaign finance paperwork should be completed in advance. The upcoming election, set for November 2024, follows the council's decision to fill the vacancy left by Barbara Foushee’s move to mayor.
