Dear Insiders,
The Chapel Hill Insider will be taking a well-deserved break this week to celebrate the July 4th holiday. This time off allows us to appreciate the unity and spirit that define us as Americans. We hope you have a wonderful holiday week filled with joy, relaxation, and memorable moments with loved ones. Thank you for being part of our community. We look forward to coming back to you next Monday!

From Arts to Action: Schulke's Vision for a Lively Downtown Chapel Hill
Chapel Hill is revitalizing its downtown area post-pandemic under the leadership of Jeri Lynn Schulke of the Chapel Hill Downtown Partnership. With a strong background in the arts, Schulke aims to integrate creative economies into the downtown landscape. Her vision includes establishing permanent cultural venues such as galleries, museums, and performance spaces to attract residents and visitors, thus boosting economic activity. Schulke plans to address challenges like high rents through strategic solutions in collaboration with the town and the University of North Carolina.

In addition to cultural venues, Schulke seeks to increase retail and service-oriented businesses downtown, catering to the growing number of residents and workers. She also emphasizes the importance of public spaces, envisioning small parks and gathering places that encourage community connections and support various events. Schulke aims to retain Chapel Hill’s unique charm by repurposing empty spaces creatively and promoting artistic endeavors. Through these efforts, Chapel Hill is set to emerge from the pandemic with a vibrant and culturally rich downtown.
Suspect Arrested After High-Speed Chase and Standoff in Pittsboro
A high-speed chase on Saturday night ended in a standoff and the eventual arrest of 47-year-old Chad Vernon Clark in Pittsboro. The chase began on I-87 and continued on I-40 before officers lost sight of Clark’s vehicle. He was later found at his home, where he barricaded himself. Clark was arrested after nearly six hours and faces multiple charges. No injuries were reported.
Durham Secures $12M Grant to Boost Holloway Street Pedestrian Safety
Durham's transportation department has secured a $12 million federal grant to improve pedestrian safety along Holloway Street. The funds will address high traffic fatalities, sidewalk gaps, and lack of bus stop amenities. The project aims to enhance safety and accessibility for East Durham residents, ensuring better infrastructure and dignified access to public transit.
