Burlington Woman Charged in Carrboro Homicide, Arrested in LA
A woman from Burlington, NC, has been charged in connection with a May homicide. Karla Maria Machuca, 28, faces charges including first-degree murder and was arrested in Los Angeles. Raising Cane’s on Franklin StreetGrows into Neighboring Starbucks Space
Raising Cane’s is expanding into the soon-to-be-vacated Starbucks location on Franklin Street, Chapel Hill, following the latter’s move across the street. The new Starbucks location is set to open before UNC’s fall semester begins. Raising Cane’s expansion will start in early fall. The property, bought for $3.9 million, previously housed Spanky’s. Additionally, Voodoo Wing Company is opening nearby.
N.C. Central Student to Represent North Carolina at Miss America Pageant
Carrie Everett, a North Carolina Central University student, will represent North Carolina at the Miss America Pageant. As a rising sophomore, she plans to spend the next year promoting her community service initiative and encouraging more girls to compete in the pageant. Despite starting with only $40, Everett relied on community support and aimed to inspire others to compete on a budget. She won a scholarship, a car, and additional awards for her talents. Everett is the fourth African American woman to be crowned Miss North Carolina in the pageant's history.
Chapel Hill Filming to Disrupt Traffic, Seeks Hundreds of Extras
There is still time to be a star—or at least an extra in a movie filming right here in our backyard! Strawberry Fields and Cherrix Casting are seeking extras for film production in Chapel Hill from July 8 to July 10. The casting call is open to men and women aged 18 and over, of all diversities and ethnicities. Applicants should email [email protected] with a recent photo and personal details. The pay rate is $134 for 10 hours, with potential overtime. Filming will occur near McCorkle Place, impacting traffic and parking around UNC-Chapel Hill's campus. Visit UNC's website for more casting details. Rumors suggest the film might be the sequel to The Summer I Turned Pretty.
Filming will primarily occur near McCorkle Place and the surrounding buildings in Chapel Hill. This production is expected to cause road closures and significantly impact travel times, traffic congestion, and parking around UNC-Chapel Hill's campus on July 8 and July 9.
