Pierce Freelon, a former Durham City Council member, has launched Coco Fro, a vegan freeze-dried ice cream made from coconut cream and milk. This innovative dessert, funded through a successful Kickstarter campaign, offers a lactose-free treat with a unique texture. Coco Fro is part of Freelon's broader vision of integrating Afrofuturism into his work and supporting community initiatives like Blackspace. With plans to expand flavors and distribution, Freelon aims to bring Coco Fro to a national audience.

In Orange County, NC, construction on Interstate 40 has led to a 200% increase in accidents, with Trooper E.M. Haynes handling multiple crashes in one day. The construction project, adding lanes along 11.5 miles, is causing significant bottlenecks and traffic delays. Some drivers are using alternative routes to avoid the congestion. The NCDOT is working to manage the situation with various measures, but the effectiveness is still uncertain. The widening project is expected to continue until late 2025.

From Gold to Paper: The Story of North Carolina's Early Currency

The Wilson Special Collections Library at UNC Chapel Hill is hosting an exhibit on North Carolina's historical currency, showcasing the state's monetary evolution before and after the Civil War. Bob Schreiner, the curatorial specialist, highlights how the reliability of modern money contrasts sharply with the uncertain and often counterfeit-ridden currency of the past. The exhibit also explores the impact of North Carolina's gold discovery in 1799 and the establishment of a mint in Charlotte. The library is open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
