FROM THE INSIDE…

Inside This Issue: The United States turns 250 on Saturday, and our three towns are celebrating in ways that feel exactly like them — drones over Chapel Hill, a People’s Parade through Carrboro, and free watermelon in Hillsborough. South Creek just made 80 acres of forest permanent. And if you’re heading out for the Fourth, we’ve got the parking breakdown you actually need.

LET’S STEP INSIDE →

Feature Story

250 Years. Three Towns. One Weekend.

Saturday marks 250 years since the country declared its independence. A quarter of a millennium. And if you’re wondering how Chapel Hill, Carrboro, and Hillsborough plan to mark the occasion — the answer is: exactly the way you’d expect each of them to.

Chapel Hill: Drones, Not Fireworks

For the first time, Chapel Hill is replacing its traditional fireworks with a drone show — 300 synchronized drones lifting off at 9:20 p.m. from Chapel Hill High School and arranging themselves into shapes, images, and text painted in light across the sky. The show is produced by Skyworx and coordinated by Chapel Hill Community Arts & Culture.

The move away from fireworks is deliberate. The town cites sustainability, accessibility, and community feedback from a 2024 survey as the reasons behind the switch. It’s also quieter — something pet owners, veterans, and parents of small children have been asking for.

Gates open at 7 p.m. with food, live music, and face painting. But here’s the thing you need to know: there is no parking at Chapel Hill High School, Smith Middle School, or Seawell Elementary. None. Free shuttles run from the Rosemary Parking Deck and UNC’s RR Lot between 6 and 8:45 p.m., and again from 9:35 to 10:05 p.m. ADA-accessible parking is first come, first served at Chapel Hill High starting at 6 p.m.

Earlier in the day, Preservation Chapel Hill hosts its Old Fashioned Fourth of July on the Horace Williams House lawn at 610 East Rosemary Street from 1 to 3 p.m. — free ice cream, lemonade, and live music from The Village Band. Lawn chairs and blankets welcome.

Carrboro: Full Carrboro

Carrboro’s celebration runs from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. and is basically Carrboro distilled into a single day.

It starts at Weaver Street Market with bike and wagon decorating, a kids’ costume contest, and patriotic tattoo stations. At 10:50 a.m., the People’s Parade kicks off — led by the Bulltown Strutters — and winds down Weaver Street to Town Hall. Aaron Keck of 97.9 The Hill emcees.

The main event hits Carrboro Town Commons from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. with a Jeghetto puppet show (he builds moving sculptures from recycled materials — all ages, do not sleep on this), a baby crawl contest, a pie-eating contest, live music from Liquid Pleasure featuring Kenny Mann, and a fire department interactive smoke house.

At 2 p.m., the day shifts to the Carrboro Century Center for the 13th Annual Community Reading of Frederick Douglass’ essay, “The Meaning of the Fourth of July for the Negro.” Mayor Barbara Foushee hosts, with a keynote from Dr. Ajamu Dillahunt-Holloway, an NC State historian specializing in African American labor and civil rights history. Come early — seats fill up.

And if you’re an early riser: the Four on the Fourth road race starts at 8 a.m. at McDougle Middle School. Bring non-perishable items for PORCH.

Parking alert: Do NOT park at Carr Mill Mall for any of these events. It’s for mall customers only and they will tow. Use public lots on Fidelity Street or at Carrboro Elementary.

Hillsborough: All Day, All Heart

Hillsborough is hosting “Together, We Are America” — a free, all-day festival at River Park from 10 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. This is the big one for Orange County’s America 250 celebration.

Expect a juried craft market, live performances, cultural and historical demonstrations, and a “We the People” parade. The evening wraps with an Independence Day laser show. Mayor Jess Bell specifically shifted the schedule toward afternoon and evening to avoid the worst of the midday heat.

Visitors can also contribute to the River Park ARTch — a public metal arch on the Churton Street side of the park. Local artists will be on hand to help you become part of Hillsborough’s newest public art installation.

Pittsboro, Cooking Out

Down in Chatham County, The Plant at 220 Lorax Lane is hosting a Fourth of July cookout from 2 to 9 p.m. — yard games, sprinklers for kids, live music. Free admission; pay for food and drink.

FROM AROUND TOWN

80 Acres of Forest, Protected Forever

The developers of South Creek have formally conveyed 80 acres of undeveloped land to the Triangle Land Conservancy — making it the largest privately-owned tract within Chapel Hill town limits to be permanently protected from future construction. The parcel, located along Obie Creek near Southern Village, will eventually include a roughly four-mile unpaved trail system designed by the Conservancy, with Beechwood Homes funding the buildout and a bridge across the creek. The trails will connect to nearby Fan Branch Trail, Morgan Creek Trail, and Merritt’s Pasture.

OWASA Responds to Wastewater Overflow

OWASA crews responded to a sanitary sewer overflow on June 26 at 4302 Drew Hill Lane near Eastowne Drive. An estimated 5,400 gallons of untreated wastewater entered an unnamed tributary of New Hope Creek before crews stopped the flow within 36 minutes. The cause: a grease blockage in the sewer line. OWASA is conducting community outreach upstream to educate residents and businesses on proper disposal of fats, oils, and grease. The overflow comes as Orange County continues to experience what the NC Drought Management Advisory Council has declared an “exceptional drought.”

Carrboro Declares July Disability Pride Month

Mayor Barbara Foushee has proclaimed July 2026 as Disability Pride Month in Carrboro, recognizing the contributions, leadership, and experiences of disabled residents.

Coming to the Ackland: Two New Exhibitions

The Ackland Art Museum opens two new exhibitions on July 10: “Care and Concern: Recent Acquisitions of Modern and Contemporary Art” and “Continental Shift: Recent Acquisitions of African Art.” Both run through September 6. Meanwhile, Jen Clay’s immersive installation “Soft Night, Watching” closes July 12 — last chance if you haven’t seen it. Free admission, Wednesday through Sunday.

INsight from the INSIDER

"We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union..."

— Preamble to the United States Constitution

Two hundred and fifty years. We’re still becoming. The preamble doesn’t say “a perfect union” — it says a more perfect one. That’s not a destination. That’s a direction.

And in a place like ours — where a puppet master builds art from recycled materials on the Carrboro Town Commons, a historian reads Frederick Douglass aloud in the same building where neighbors ate pie an hour earlier, and 300 drones replace fireworks because the community asked for something quieter and kinder — the work of becoming looks a lot like showing up for each other.

We’re fortunate to live in a corner of the world where we can still reach for more. Where imperfect doesn’t mean impossible. Where showing up is the work.

Happy birthday, America. We’re still here. We’re still at it.

Until next time,

Be in the know!
